Construction Update – April 26, 2010Work to Begin on Second Phase of Construction Next Week

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and its contractor, Gary Merlino Construction, are making improvements near several bus stops on Third Avenue that will improve pedestrian mobility and increase transit speed and efficiency.

Last week, the contractor began the first phase of construction on the west side of Third Avenue between Cedar and Vine streets.  This work will continue for up to three more weeks.

Next week, the contractor will begin work on the second phase.  The sidewalk on the west side of Third Avenue between Bell Street and Blanchard Street will be partially widened and new concrete street panels will be installed.

Schedule for the Second Phase of Construction

The contractor will start work on Wednesday, April 28th and, weather permitting, anticipates completing this work by Friday, May 21st.  Working hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend work.

**Note: Contractor will work 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, May 1st to demo and remove the existing street panels.

Traffic and Pedestrian Restrictions

There will be one lane open in each direction on Third Avenue, with parking and loading restrictions in and around the work zone.

The sidewalk on the west side of Third Avenue will be closed at Bell Street and detours posted.  Pedestrian access to local businesses will be maintained.

Traffic control measures will be in place 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Construction Update – April 14, 2010

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) and its contractor, Gary Merlino Construction, are making improvements near several bus stops on Third Avenue that will improve pedestrian mobility and increase transit speed and efficiency.

The construction kick-off planned for April 12th has been rescheduled to start April 15th.

The contractor will begin the first phase of construction on the west side of Third Avenue from the corner of Cedar Street to approximately 75 feet north of the corner of Third Avenue and Vine Street.

As part of this work, the sidewalk on the west side of Third Avenue between Cedar Street and Vine Street will be partially widened and new concrete street panels will be installed.

Schedule for First Phase of Construction

The contractor will start work on Friday, April 16th and, weather permitting, anticipates completing this work by Friday, May 14th.  Working hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional night and weekend work.

**Note: The contractor will work 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday, April 17th to demo and remove the existing street panels.

Project Overview

The Third Avenue/Belltown Transit Priority Corridor Improvements Project is located on Third Avenue between Cedar Street and Virginia Street.  The project will create more attractive sidewalks and dedicated passenger waiting areas, while improving bus travel times in the corridor.

Specific Improvements to the Third Avenue/Belltown Corridor Include:

•Building concrete bus bulb/curb and sidewalk extensions to eliminate buses having to pull in and out of traffic at passenger loading zones.

•Making improvements to street lighting

•Building new curb ramps

•Installing new bike racks

The project construction has been divided into three work zones.  The work zones and initial construction schedule are as follows:

Work Zone 1:  Both sides of Third Avenue from Cedar Street to Vine Street  (west side from April 15 to May 14; east side in early July)

Work Zone 2:  Both sides of Third Avenue from north of Bell Street to south of Bell Street (west side the last 3 weeks in May; east side in late July)

Work Zone 3:  Both sides of Third Avenue from south of Lenora Street to south of Virginia Street (west side the first 3 weeks in June; east side in August)

What to Expect During Construction

•Lane closures (there will be one lane open in each direction 24 hours a day seven days a week )

•Temporary pedestrian detours

•Temporary bus zone closures

•Temporary parking restrictions

•Moderate construction noise

•Normal work hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. with occasional weekend work
