William Collier: Synopsis of a Memoir, Pt. 23 - From Paris to London

January 22, 2016

The next couple days were spent visiting the Cathedral of Notre Dame and Sainte Chapelle with its incredible stained glass, the Palaces of Versailles, and the Luxembourg Gardens. There was a constant temptation to do a bit of shopping, however we were looking forward to shopping in London in the fashion district of Chelsea on King’s Road. We were delighted with our time in Paris, at the same time ready to fly on to London, as we were looking forward to speaking English, and to hearing English spoken.

The next morning we were on our way to Charles de Gaulle airport for our flight to London. I had a good feeling about London...just being able to read and understand the language was a relief. Our hotel was located in the Chelsea district walking distance to King’s Road, a hip fashion oriented street. Just knowing we would be on our way home in a couple of days had a soothing effect on the sensory overload we were experiencing. We had reached the point where being home was competing with our desire to see yet another tourist attraction.

London was exactly what we had hoped for and more. We arrived early enough to get settled in our hotel room and have our first breakfast in days. Bangers and mash was a welcome change from pastry and coffee or sometimes just coffee, not having much appetite in the morning, a condition encouraged by the habit we had acquired of eating on the fly. After breakfast we decided to start with the Tower of London, a destination we were both interested in. Part of the history of the Tower of London that I recall fascinated me were the Ravens, which are kept by clipping their wings. The story claims the birds were originally attracted by the smell of the corpses that were crudely buried there. The wings of these birds are clipped in support of the superstition that if they were to leave, the Tower would fall. There are many fascinating stories involving the Tower of London, some considerably grittier than others, including the morbid history of the tower. After that experience we moved on to explore the more uplifting attractions of this incredible city...
